The 10 Ways to Find a Job When there are so many options you dont even know where to begin Finding a job can become a stressful and sometimes even daunting experience; things seem to change so quickly when it comes to the right way to apply for a job so it can be hard to keep track. But it doesn’t have to be that scary as there are now more ways than ever to get yourself in front of that employer and get yourself hired in your dream job. In the job search it is all about going the extra mile so if the below aren’t part of your job search then you need to add them quickly. These are my top 10 ways to find a job It is the obvious starter but one you can’t avoid. Get yourself online and you can simply type your dream job into any search engine and thousands of results will appear, so to narrow down your options you can stick to the big players in the job board market such as Indeed, CV Library,  Monster and Jobsite. Employers are uploading new job specifications daily and you can easily filter your search by salary, location or job title. Remember not to limit yourself though, the more you filter the less you will see; so keep your salary to a bracket rather than a particular amount and instead of adding a specific job title start looking at industries and sectors you want to work in to broaden your results. You never know what will come up that might be just right but not actually fall under your huge list of requirements. You probably use Social Media on the daily, whether you are liking, commenting or scrolling we are all glued to our screen. You can’t resist checking your phone every 5 minutes for that blue flash but have you ever considered using your social media account to get you hired? If you haven’t you are missing out. More and more employers now have a social presence and most are advertising their vacancies first on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and even Snapchat; with the big brands even accepting applications through these channels. So take 10 minutes out from watching cat videos and instead start connecting with brands online and building relationships with their hiring managers. If you haven’t got an account yet, you should definitely set up a profile. Where else can you connect directly with hiring managers and actually send them messages without the reception screening your calls. Add your experiences and qualifications and be sure to sell yourself, just like you would in a CV. Connect with previous colleagues and friends and ask them to endorse your skills to give your profile a boost to employers. Most agencies will work on hundreds of roles and they will be able to match you directly to companies that are currently hiring. You can do a quick search for agencies within your sector and either call them up or pop in and see them. They will most likely ask you to do a pre-interview to assess your suitability to their client list and then if you pass, they do all the hard work for you. I would always suggest continuing with your own search but keep in touch with the recruiter so they can be checking in the background. Why wouldn’t you want more people on your team helping you wade through the mountain of jobs out there? Referrals are by far the best way to get yourself hired. Companies like to trust they are employing the right person for the job and having a current employee vouch for the new staff member makes that person more hireable. Next time you’re looking for a job, spread the world with your friends, family and use them to help you connect with employers. It is about who you know and you never know who your connections could put you in contact with, so don’t be afraid to ask the question and get yourself noticed. It doesn’t mean a guaranteed job just because you know someone at a company but it makes it easier for sure. Career Fairs are usually day events and can be small gatherings with a few career advisors and local organisations or can be huge productions with leading brands present. Do your research online and get some dates for upcoming events, most allow you to walk in on the day and don’t require any type of booking but always double check. You get the chance to see what roles are on offer, as well as linking with representatives from the companys to discuss their roles in more depth and talk about their recruitment processes. As a recruiter I attended these types of events on behalf of several clients and would even set up interviews there and then with candidates I thought fit the bill. It is only a few hours of your time and you could gain so many useful connections. Yes, I know we are all online nowadays but the paper still has its place. It used to be the go to place for job searching and it seems to have died out in more recent years but that doesn’t mean employers aren’t still advertising there. If not just for the ad section but for the actual news, company’s often do press releases about their new products or their expansions and these headlines are usually followed by a recruitment drive so get in first. If you see a company is growing then send a spec CV through to them detailing your interest and be the first resume that crosses their eyes when they are considering taking on new members to their team. Organised networking events aren’t just for sales people, they are for everyone. Most large brands hold regular monthly or weekly networking events to allow businesses to connect, but they are also a great ways for candidates to meet the decision makers. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a natural sales person to get something from a networking event, you just need to be personable and get over the fear of meeting new people. Remember, no one else there knows everyone, you are all in the same boat â€" forming new connections. If nothing else they are normal a great place to get some free food! When you need to find something, you get out there and look for it and companies looking to recruit are no different. They might have put an advert on a job board but they haven’t just left it there, they are actively searching for the right person, so if you aren’t searchable they will miss you. So what do I mean? When you sign up to any job board they will ask you if you want your details to be searchable to recruiters. Now you might have said no because you don’t want spam emails but this isn’t about them selling their services this is about recruiters sending you jobs that match your job search. It is the completely lazy way to get a job, have them come to you. Job clubs are usually run by non-profit organisations or local councils and their main aim is to give job seekers advice on how to get back into employment. Usually groups run hourly sessions on a weekly or monthly basis and they are a great place to meet like-minded people and share advice and support. But not only are they a great place for career advice and meeting people in a similar circumstance, it is a great place to find out about jobs available and potentially meet employers. Employers will attend these types of groups to meet individuals looking for work and will send through the list of their latest jobs available. So why not get expert advice and a helping hand in the job search.

6 Tips for Dealing With a New Boss Even if you’ve been at your job for years, suddenly getting a new boss can be jarring to your routine. Although it can be intimidating, keep in mind that your boss is also trying to adjust to a new role and the demands that come with it. Here are some steps you can take to help ensure a smooth transition and make sure that your new supervisor sees you as someone he or she can count on. Schedule a meeting. You’ll be better off if you think of a new boss’s arrival as a reboot rather than a disturbance, says Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer at CareerBuilder. “This could be an opportunity for you to start fresh,” she says. Plan a meetingâ€"be proactiveâ€"to discuss any long-running or open-ended projects you currently have on your plate or that you anticipate in the near future.”Bring up projects you’d like to work on,” Haefner suggests. This meeting is also the place to ask about what your manager would like to see from you. “Setting expectations from the beginning will help minimize conflict,” Haefner says. Don’t make it about you. “It’s many people’s instinct to see this as an opportunity to make sure your boss knows how great you are and where you want to go next in your career,” says Christine DiDonato, founder of Career Revolution Inc. That’s a mistake, she warns. The first impression you want to give is that you’re a team player, which means the spotlight should remain off you for the time being. “The questions you should ask should be focused on helping them versus yourself,” she says. Pay attention to your boss’s schedule. “You’d be surprised how paying attention to really basic things about a person’s work cadence can help you adjust to their style and expectations,” says Sarah Nahm, founder and CEO of talent and hiring startup Lever. Take notice of things like how early they get into the office and how late they stay, when they’re most productive and responsive to emails, and when they like to schedule meetings. Figure out the best way to communicate. “One of the most common sources of workplace conflict is miscommunication, so make the effort to understand your boss’s communication style right off the bat,” Haefner says. “Depending on how different it is from your previous boss’s, it may take some getting used to,” she cautions, but this is an adjustment you can’t afford not to make. Find out if she prefers face-to-face updates or email (or even instant messaging), and proceed accordingly. Find out how quickly you need to respond. When it comes to communicating, the “when” is just as important as the “how,” says Nancy Mellard, the national leader of consulting company CBIZ’s Women’s Advantage leadership program. “If your boss sends you an email after hours, does he or she expect you reply immediately, or are you able to wait until morning to respond?” she says. “The communications piece of the puzzle solves almost every other challenge.” Plan to hit a few bumps in the road. “Set up a structure for feedback before you need one,” Nahm says. “You’re both adjusting to a new situation and a hiccup or two is normal, but you don’t want to wait for something to go wrong before you have open communication.” Initially, weekly or biweekly check-ins can give you both a chance to evaluate how the work and your communication around it is going. “Ill feelings can crop up simply when one person misinterprets the other,” Nahm says, so it’s important to curtail any miscommunication before it spirals out of control. Should You Apply For A Job Youre Not Fully Qualified For - Work It Daily Some of my clients have asked me if it makes sense to apply for a job they aren’t fully qualified for. Related: 5 Interview Secrets That Will Help You Beat The Competition While I won’t give you a straight yes or no answer â€" I’d like share some observations from my recruitment work and also my interview coaching practice. Firstly, don’t let a list of requirements on a job description to intimidate you, especially if it is a very long list. The list of requirements is often more of a wish list for the ideal candidate and that ideal candidate doesn’t always exist. Employers aren’t always looking for an exact match, but more for a skill set. Let’s suppose they are looking for an event planner who’s done some hospital foundation benefits, and you have experience running non profits fundraisers in the arts world â€" you’ll probably fit the bill quite well. You need to prove that your experience qualifies you to do the job you’re applying for. You do this by using specific examples throughout your resume and cover letter. Or, if you have the experience an employer is looking for, but just not quite enough, you can draw their attention to your positive track record that shows that you’re ready to take on more responsibilities. Also, if they are looking for specific skills, whether it is CRM software or Javascript or knowledge of languages, list them on your resume. Having said all that â€" if you don’t meet the minimum requirements, please don’t apply â€" you are wasting your time and you are wasting recruiters’ time. If you apply for something you are completely not qualified for, you won’t be remembered in a positive light. When I recruited for Expedia, I’d seen the same person apply for over 20 jobs within the company. Even if a job came up that this person would be suitable for, they just wouldn’t be considered a credible candidate. You should read the entire job description, do some research on the company, and use your sound judgment to decide if you want to apply or not. I get so many unsuitable applications that I sometimes wonder if the candidate has fully read the job description. Just to give you an example, I am currently looking for a digital Account Manager who speaks fluent German and this is one of the first requirements listed on a job description. Guess what? More than half of the people who’ve applied don’t speak German. Or, if I am looking for an experienced media sales person, even if you’ve been a sales super star in another industry, you most likely won’t be considered. You’re really going to have the best chances applying for jobs that you’re qualified for â€" you don’t have to be a perfect match, but you should be fairly close. When employers get a lot of applications from highly qualified candidates, there’s just no incentive for them to consider someone less qualified. Of course, there are degrees of qualified. If they want 10 years of experience and you have two years, this isn’t the job for you. But if they want 3-5 years of experience and you have two years, and you can write a really good cover letter and point to excellent achievements in those two years, I’d say go ahead and apply. Employers write their job descriptions in order to attract candidates who are a good match. If the ad says they’re looking for specific qualifications, do yourself a favor and don’t apply unless you have the experience they’re looking for. The idea is to put yourself in the hiring manager’s shoes. What should make them excited about hiring you or inviting you to an interview? That’s what needs to be reflected in your cover letter and your resume. If you can’t figure out why they should be excited about hiring you, then there’s no way you can expect them to figure it out â€" and that means you need to move on to a different opening, one where you can make a compelling case for yourself. Go work out.Working out helps to release endorphins and can pick up your mood. If youre feeling stuck, thats an aspect of your that you can control. Its something you can do for yourself, starting today, to make a positive impact on both your physical and mental health.7. Find a purpose.Finding a purpose in life, whatever it may be, can help to provide you more direction. For example, if you find a purpose in your career, through a volunteering project outside of office hours, through your family, etc., it can help you to feel like you have some kind of direction something toward which youre working.8. Try something new.The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and then expecting a different result. So try something new, if youre feeling stuck.
